Barium Sulphide (BaS, CAS 21109-95-5) is made by heating barite (barium sulphate) with carbon at high temperature. The result is a gray, off-white or light-colored solid, sold as powder, granules or lumps depending on the grade. It is the usual starting point for soluble barium compounds, and it is used in lithopone pigment, luminescent materials and as a hair-removing agent in tanneries. It is toxic and reacts with moisture and acids to release hydrogen sulphide, so keep it dry and handle it with good ventilation.
