Sodium Ethoxide (NaOEt)
Sodium Ethoxide is an organometallic compound with the chemical formula C2H5ONa. It appears as a white to light-yellowish hygroscopic powder or as a clear, amber-colored liquid solution in ethanol. Unlike standard inorganic bases, sodium ethoxide reacts aggressively with moisture, readily breaking down into sodium hydroxide and ethanol, which requires solution-based industrial processes to be kept strictly anhydrous.
Its principal industrial application is in organic condensation reactions, where it enhances carbanion formation and improves specialty chemical yield. It is also employed in agrochemical manufacturing, analytical laboratories, transesterification catalysts, custom fragrances, and controlled alkylation steps.
Due to its hazardous and air-sensitive nature, Sodium Ethoxide should always be stored, transported, and used in compliance with established environmental, occupational safety, and hazardous chemical handling regulations.
